  • The GRHOP supplement was prominently featured in the most recent October 2017 newsletter of the ​Journal of Public Health Management & Practice. The supplement revolves around the GRHOP design and efforts and covers multiple authors addressing: building resilience in the affected Gulf Region communities, the training of community health workers to build disaster resilience, and successes and lessons learned from the community outreach efforts. 

  • Regional Care Collaborative Forum: "Population Health: Adding Value to Outcomes" will occur on December 12-13, 2017 at the Intercontinental Hotel in New Orleans


  • The Community Health Worker Training Project (CHWTP) will host a CHW Evaluation Retreat in Mobile, AL, on August 20-22, 2017. The retreat will evaluate the effectiveness of training for CHWs, and evaluate the utility of CHWs in increasing healthcare capacity and enhancing community resilience. Following the retreat, a Chronic Disease Management training session will be held in Mobile, AL.

  • The Community Health Workers Training Project (CHWTP) completed their second session of Advanced Training for Community Health Workers in the Prevention and Management of Chronic Diseases. This was a 5-day training held in New Orleans, LA for 24 participants from around the GRHOP area. Photos of the session are available on CHWTP's Facebook page:

  • The Community Health Worker Training Project will host CHW Training Sessions on August 2-14, 2015 at the Mobile Marriott, 3101 Airport Blvd., Mobile, AL 36606. Please see the PDF below for the training schedule.

  • The Environmental Health Capacity and Literacy Project will convene a live Informational Webinar regarding the Community Health Worker Placement Program on May 6, 2015 that will be recorded and available for those who cannot attend in person.  A link to the Webinar is as follows:

  • The Community Health Workers Training Project trained 26 Peer Health Advocates (PHAs) from Mississippi and Louisiana in March 2014. On August 10-13, 2014, the CHWTP will conduct a PHA training in New Orleans for volunteers from the following Louisiana parishes: Orleans, St. Bernard, Lafourche, Jefferson, Plaquemines, Terrebonne, and Cameron.   • Alliance Institute, in conjunction with VIET (Vietnamese Initiatives in Economic Training), held a Community Health Fair at Mary Queen of Vietnam Church on May 17, 2014. Additional community involvement meetings will be scheduled in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida in the coming months. For more information about VIET, please visit
  • Dr. Langhinrichsen-Rohling of the Mental and Behavioral Health Capacity Project for Alabama won the “Outstanding Poster Award” for the Restoration Category at the 2014 International Oil Spill Conference. Her poster can be viewed here.
  • The 2014 International Oil Spill Conference, held in Savannah, GA on May 5-8, 2014, featured a public health session chaired by Dr. Ayanna V. Buckner and comprised of four GRHOP-led presentations.
  • On March 6, 2014, members of the Mental and Behavioral Health Capacity Project for Louisiana were featured in the following article from WWLTV: New treatment program for physical and mental health related to disasters.
  • Four abstracts describing the GRHOP were presented at the 2014 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference held in Mobile, AL on January 26-29.

  • On November 15, 2013, Alliance Institute held a symposium in New Orleans, LA called “The Affordable Care Act and Access to Health Care Along the Gulf Coast.” The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, and national health care reform experts joined Alliance for a discussion about how implementation of the Affordable Care Act impacts Gulf State communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
